Friday’s Faces from the Past: Holiday

Probably 1956/7

Probably 1956/7

In the very back row, the two boys, happen to be uncle and nephew. From left to right there is my mom’s cousin, then her Uncle Rod, her brother Bob, and then my mom (isn’t she cute?). My great-grandparents had their last (that would be Rod) when their oldest son had his first (that would be Bob). Could you imagine being pregnant at the same time as your mother-in-law? Or having to call your playmate uncle?

Oh, family 🙂

In an aside, I finished the Boston University Genealogical Research Certificate Program!! So now my time will be dedicated to starting my business. Can you believe I started this venture only a year ago? 🙂

Travel Tuesday: 1927 Plane to Detroit

Written in Erma (Almy) Witherell's hand "my first plane ride" 1927

Written in Erma (Almy) Witherell’s hand “my first plane ride” 1927. Can you imagine that kind of plane ride???

"Glenn took picture from the plane. James Rd. Airport. Arrow showing where we landed."

James Rd. Runway

James Road Runway. I have no idea if this is from Saginaw (if that’s where they started from) or Detroit. I couldn’t seem to find what used to be called James Road Airport or Runway. It could be in Bay City actually, which is very near Saginaw. I know Bay City has a similarly named airport that is now called James Clements Municipal Airport. Could be the same place.

One of the many plants of Detroit, I'm sure. The arrow is point to the Grey Iron Plant

One of the many plants of the area, I’m sure. The arrow is pointing to the Grey Iron Plant. I’m not sure if this is near Saginaw or part of Detroit.

Probably this was the reason for the trip - Erma's cousin, Ivan Wiltse, in Detroit 1927

Probably this was the reason for the trip – Erma’s cousin, Ivan Wiltse, in Detroit 1927. Ivan was the son of Erma’s father’s sister, Chauncey. I wonder if this house is still standing in Detroit…

Travel Tuesday: Berlin Postcard and Berchtesgaden Salt Mines

Postcard from Fae and Ken Almy to Glenn and Erma Witherell

Postcard from Fae and Ken Almy to Glenn and Erma Witherell – unknown year

Finally got to Berlin. It is a wonderful city but some of the things like the wall and evidence of war damage seem nearly unbelievable. Taking many pictures and enjoying living it up.

1969 trip to Germany

1969 trip to Germany

My family is on the last platform. Starting from the woman sitting at the front of that platform who is my Aunt Fae, then Ken, Erma, Glenn, and Arlene followed by three unknown people. My parents have a similar picture of them doing this when they lived in Germany in the late 70’s. One day, I want to go and get a similar picture (if they are still doing them) just so I can have all three. 🙂

Wordless Wednesday: A Moment in Time

1941 Glenn and Erma Witherell

1941 Glenn and Erma Witherell

I love this picture for two big reasons: 1) I love the way my great-grandma is looking at my great-grandpa and 2) I’d love to think that this was a full belly laugh my great-grandpa is giving. I never got to hear his voice or full laugh as he had his voice box removed before I came around (or could remember). I wish I knew what it had sounded like.
